Portuguese Nationality
Frequently asked questions
Are five years of residence still enough?
For new naturalisation applications submitted from 19 May 2026, the general rule is seven years for nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries and the EU, and ten for others. Administrative proceedings already pending on that date follow the previous law.
Does being born in Portugal always confer nationality?
No: this depends on the date of birth, the parents' nationality and residence, and the applicable legal grounds.
Can I choose any grounds?
The route must match facts that can be proved. A consultation helps avoid using a template or document checklist for a different category.
